Aurra: Live And Let Live (Salsoul SA 8559)

‘Such A Feeling’; ‘Coming To Get You’; ‘Live And Let Live’; ‘Undercover Lover’; ‘Baby Love’; ‘You Can’t Keep On Walking’; ‘One More Time’; ‘Positive’

ALTHOUGH AURRA started out as an offshoot of Slave, they have gradually carved out a following for themselves and vocalists, Curt Jones and Starleana Young, have developed something of a sound of their own. However, the bass playing feel of their producer, Steve Washington, still accentuates that Slave-ish feel to the uptempo cuts and on this album that is especially evident on cuts such as ‘Coming To Get You’, ‘Undercover Lover’, ‘Positive’ and ‘Baby Love’, all of which have definite dancefloor potential.

The same goes for the funkier ‘You Can’t Keep On Walking’ — a gutsy little track that even has one of those appealing but very old-fashioned percussion breakdowns tagged on at the end! On the more romantic side of things, try the mellow but slightly monotonous ‘One More Time’ or the more midtempo ‘Live And Let Live’ title track, on which Curt reminds me a little of Peabo Bryson.

A solid continuation in the recording career of this capable New York based group. (Rating: 7)
